TNR Update
Thursday, October 22, 2009
There are a few ways you can continue to help us help cats in the community:
- Monetary Donations - on the average, it costs the HSC about $70 per cat, to provide sterilization and a rabies vaccination.
We also accept donations for tame, stray or needy cats in the community who also benefit from the same.
- Consider sponsoring a cat here in Culpeper County. Your gift of sponsorship will change a life.
As a special thank you and acknowledgement of your generosity, your name will be added to our 2009/2010 TNR Special Sponsorships on our website for donations of $100.00 or more.

A Call for Dog Fosters
Thursday, October 15, 2009
The HSC needs fosters for DOGS at this time.Â
We currently have a need to register foster homes for dogs, in the event that an urgent rescue becomes necessary.
If you are preregistered with our foster program, we will be able to contact you when the need arises and make quick arrangements.
In most rescue situations, the need is immediate and the animals are typically in need of food and medical attention.
You can download our foster application or call us at 727-7554.

Kittens, Oreo and Midnight have found a loving home together and Tiger Lilly (the Dane pup) went home yesterday as well.
A special thanks goes to Debbie Fincham for helping foster Tulah - a recent TNR rescue and our newest bunch of feral kittens - six tiny 6 week old cuties.

We are grateful for the community's support!!
Continued Collaboration
Sunday, September 20, 2009

Meet Rose McKinney and Elizabeth Larsen of FOCAS - Friends of the Culpeper Animal Shelter.
Both work very hard to support the county shelter's cats by utilizing area PetSmart adoption centers and events.
Rose and Elizabeth also work with Loretta Clatterbuck, the shelter's adoption coordinator - these three dedicated women
work tirelessly to rescue, sometimes foster and then help find homes for these cats/kittens through adoption.
Â
They also just implemented a working relationship with Dr. Susan Jacobsen, a local vet who helps spay/neuter shelter
kitties and prepare them for adoption.
Both the HSC and FOCAS are local non-profit organizations. Together, both the HSC as well as FOCAS hope to bring about change and new hope for Culpeper's cats.
To find out more about their organization, contact the Culpeper County Dept. of Animal Services at 540-547-4477

Our dependable and committed teenage volunteer, Quinn-Lynn Bates, recently celebrated her 13th birthday.
In doing so, she and her friends collected much needed cat food and litter for our food/supply shelves.Â
We are grateful to her and to her friends and family who were so generous in their unexpected donation to the HSC!!
Thanks, Quinn-Lynn!!
She also volunteers for every PetSmart event and does a fantastic job working with the animals, customers, chores and cleanup!
We're so lucky to have her with us!
New Show on Channel 16

"Tad, Tilly, Tully & Tiff" in the SPOTLIGHT/What's Going On - New Show on Channel 16
The HSC would like to offer a sincere "thanks" to both Tammy Barboza and Adam Forster of Virginia Living Television.
Tammy, along with her co-host John Klumpp provided a 10 minute segment to highlight the HSC's adoption program -
by inviting the HSC to feature adoptable pets (specifically cat adoptions) and parts of the TNR program.Â
Samantha Whitesides, along with HSC foster parent, Jennifer Spiers were able to talk about the playful kittens available for adoption,
whilst Tad and Tully in particular - wiggled and purred on the laps of our media friends!!
Tammy, Adam and many others such as The Star Exponent, Channel 21, Wash & Wag and The Times Papers,
do much to help us spread the word about our efforts.
Be sure to be on the watch for more coverage to come!!
Times Community Papers Partnership
July 22, 2009
Next month, we plan to partner with the Times Community Papers and hopefully begin a routine promotion of
HSC adoptable pets, in the Culpeper Times.
In doing this, they are in need of sponsors for this feature, which will be $20 per business & $15 per individual.Â
If you are interested in supporting this fantastic opportunity (and in reaching more people throughout the community),
please consider making a donation. Each pet or feature (to be done one a month) will require 5 sponsors.Â
Each sponsor is credited per pet. The contact for this project is Kathy Mauk, who can be reached at [email protected].Â
She will handle all sponsorships on our behalf.
Thank you for supporting our adoption efforts and know that we couldn't do it without YOU!

HSC's 2008 Statistical Summary
February 21, 2009
The volunteers and the part-time staff member of the Humane Society of Culpeper kept busy last year.
Caring for companion animals from acquisition, through fostering, and ensuring appropriate adoptions, HSC attended to eighty-nine cats and dogs.
HSC saw forty-six feline adoptions and eleven canine adoptions in 2008. The Humane Society of Culpeper still had twenty-two felines and one canine at the end of 2008.
In addition to companion animal intake and adoption, HSC continued to provided access to low-cost spay / neuter clinics for the community which saw a ten percent increase in participation from 2007.
In conjunction with the Blue Ridge Animal Hospital, an annual drive-through low-cost rabies vaccination clinic was also continued.
Meanwhile, HSC started funneling dog and cat food to those in need through the Food Closet and USDA distributions.
Over one thousand pounds of food acquired by HSC or received through community donations were redistrubuted in 2008.
By the participation of a number of volunteers and support of the community, HSC has continued to pursue the welfare of Culpeper's companion animals and hope to do even more in 2009.
TNR Program Update
January 23, 2009

The HSC is thankful to report that we have recently received funding to continue our TNR or Trap-Neuter-Return Program.Â
Last year (mostly during late spring/early summer), we were able to spay/neuter/vaccinate over 80 adult cats and rescue/adopt several kittens through this program.Â
This vital assistance to cats in our area helps ensure that those whom we are able to help, lead healthy and unreproductive lives with a responsible caregiver.Â
These are generally cats living outdoors amongst several groups of cats who spend every day competing for food, shelter and care.Â
TNR cuts the population and stops the cycle of kittens who are born repeatedly each season.
Many don't understand that these cats exist simply because of our collective negligence.Â
Cats who are sexually intact that roam freely outdoors mate with other intact animals outdoors. Some are abandoned and others are stray.Â
The offspring of these animals (and their litters add up quickly) produce more cats and kittens that are surrendered or purposely trapped and given to the shelter.
Hence, the majority of cats and killed in shelters are the direct result of the original unspayed or unneutered cats that began this cycle of reproduction.Â
Therefore, by spaying and neutering your cat or helping others do the same (for both owned and unowned animals) you are preventing cats from entering the shelter system - where they are routinely killed.Â
Again, think of all of the cats (hundreds in Culpeper County alone) each year that we pay to have killed. These are healthy animals who are killed simply because they are unwanted.
On the other hand, some don't know that there are other people who are willing to help these animals and just need a hand in doing that.Â
So - all in all - most people want to do a good thing and make a difference. As long as we have adequate funding, we will be able to provide that difference and help both the people who care for these cats,
as well as the animal's themselves.
Choose a more humane solution and support TNR. Spay and neuter your pets and help spread the benefits of this lifesaving effort.Â
For more information or for TNR assistance, contact us to see if we can help.Â
This program is intended to provide s/n assistance for ferals, strays and outdoor cats who have a reliable and permenant caregiver.Â
We do not remove cats or provide adoption services for these animals, except under special circumstances.
Also know that we could use both bagged and canned cat food to distribute to needy families who care for the cats we identify through the TNR program.Â
Your support is always appreciated!

New webpage layout for HSC
December 2008
The Humane Society of Culpeper is sporting a new webpage here in the beginning of December. We thank Jannette Voorneveld of Web Weaver Web Design, LLC who created our previous wonderful webpage. A lot of her direction was carried forward with our new page. All the information that was on our website is still there and we hope to add more in the near future. For now, we're making sure the transition is completed correctly. If you have any comments or suggestions, let us know!
How the current economy is affecting HSC
Calls to surrender animals have increased
The number of calls coming into the Humane Society of Culpeper from people wanting to give up their companion animals have grown. A main reason has been the fact that they feel they don't have the resources to continue to care for their pet(s). Unfortunately, with limited foster families, HSC hasn't been in the position to take any of these animals. But, with HSC's help and other community resources, perhaps these families don't have to be broken.

TNR Program on Hold
Tremendous need has stressed program
The HSC board allotted funds to start a Trap / Spay or Neuter / Return program to help feral cat colonies in the county earlier this year. But due to the overwhelming need, those funds were depleted in short order. The HSC is currently engaged in finding ways to finance this needed program.
